By Randy Spencer – With the first Grisdale Triple Crown race in the books, the Late Models took a week off to complete in some other big events around the province. The Canadian Vintage Modifieds were in town for only their second race of the season and were joined by the Thunder Cars, Mini Stocks, Pure Stocks and F4 Modifieds.
The night would be full of excitement and definitely some controversy and a few overheated tempers. The Ponderosa Nature Resort Mini Stocks were up first to get qualifying heats underway. Dave Goodacre and Glen Vandergeld led 9 cars to green with a couple of real fast cars at the back. Mike Holmes and Rob Hoskins quickly made their way to the front and by lap three Holmes had assumed the lead with the Rabbit right on his tail. The two battled tooth and nail for real estate for the remaining 8 laps. As the two cars exited turn four, Hoskins was on the inside and Holmes on the outside, suddenly the two cars came together. Hoskins went to the grass while Holmes crossed the line first but the starter didn’t see it that way and gave the win to Hoskins. That got the night off to a roaring start. In heat number two, Brandon McFerran and Bruce Wheller were out front for the start. McFerran led the first three laps but he eventually gave way to Dave Bailey who held off Billy Schwartzenburg to pick up the win.
The Ray’s Auto Center & Towing Thunder Cars were next with their qualifiers. Jeff Bean, who’s has had some hard luck so far in 2012 started up front with Dave Silverthorn Jr. along side. Silverthorn got out front right from the start and led all ten laps for the victory. The real battle was between Bean and Rick Burbridge who has been coming on like wild fire of late. Bean was second until lap six when he couldn’t hold off Burbridge any longer as he snuck by on the back stretch and came home second. Heat number two was another great battle as Dennis Cybalski led flag to flag to pick up the win. Brad Collison, Kevin Albers and Gary Slama put on a great show battling for second through fourth.
The Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modifieds finally hit the track, their first action since they opened their 2012 touring series back on May 12th at Flamboro. Twenty cars were chomping at the bit and John Karley and Rick Schurr were on the front row for the first heat. Karley shot out to a quick lead dominating the race and led all ten laps for the win. Heat two saw Adrian Donkers pull out to an early lead only to be overtaken on the back stretch on lap four by Daryl Henwood who held on and took the checker flag.
The Pure Stocks had their qualifier Davey Boughton took the victory. The F4 Modifieds completed heat racing with probably one of the most exciting of the night to that point. Aaron Turkey who also races a Thunder Stock at Ohsweken Speedway, battled with Brian Nanticoke and it was almost a dead heat but the #68 of Turkey came out just ahead and took the checkered flag. During intermission Gord Bennett took a few lucky ticket holders around for a few laps in his two seater Late Model. One other lucky fan was also picked and will get their ride this Tuesday at the practice session.
Feature racing got underway at about 8:15 with Mini Stocks up first. Chad Ditner started on the pole and the rookie is showing some promise as he led the first three laps. But no matter who you are, it’s becoming very difficult to hold off a rabbit. Rob Hoskins started seventh in the field but made is way through traffic and took the lead on lap four. After that he checked out and was gone. He built a good lead and before long had lapped half the field. The lapped traffic made it almost impossible for the second place car of Dave Bailey to get close enough to make it a battle.
The Thunder cars were up next for their 25 lap feature and once again the blood started to boil and a few drivers over heated. By race end, seven cars ended up with a D.N.F. beside their names. Jeff Bean and Dave Silverthorn Jr. led the field to green and it wasn’t long until things got heated. Heading into turn three on lap one five cars mid pack got into it with Chris Howse going off on the flat bed. On lap 8 as they were coming out of turns three and four, the 88 of Scott Laporte and 89 of Bill Watson, traded some paint and other parts. As a result some flat tires, bent sheet metal and over heated drivers during and after the race. Both drivers have been experiencing some hard luck of late. Silverthorn led early and by lap five Rick Burbridge made his way past and into the lead and continued his hot streak taking his second feature in three weeks. Nick Troback wasn’t going down without a fight however. The two battled hard, traded paint and much of the top five came out the same way. Troback and Burbridge swapped the lead a few times as Troback showed some fine driving skill with some great cross over moves to stay near the front. So in the end though, that makes it four Burbridge features in a row and five of seven this season. Rick has two while brother Mark has won three. The only other driver to find victory lane in the feature is #27 “Killer” Kevin Albers who has won the other two.
John Karley and Adrian Donkers led the Vintage Modifeds into battle for their feature race. Several cautions slowed the pace early but Karley once again dominated the race and led all the way for the feature win. A fan favorite, Karley seems to save his best efforts for the track he and his dad Gene have raced for so many years. Father Gene was a great hobby competitor back in the 60′s and early 70′s. John’s Uncle Earl Stroh was also very dominant at Flamboro Back in the Day with the Hobbies and Limited Sportsman division where he won three consecutive points titles. In the Pure Stock feature, the “Wild Thing” Davey Boughton continued his winning ways. He won the feature two weeks ago and the heat earlier in the evening, and took the checkered in this feature as well. Veteran Dave Hodgkinson managed to battle hard with Mark Lucas and Adam Turkey and eventually was victorious in the F4 Modified feature. Hodgkinson definitely had the most speed down the straights by far but couldn’t seem to hold it in the corners and made it look hard but still came out holding the checkered flag at the finish.
That brought an end to another spectacular night of racing. Next week, plan to join us for Meet the Drivers Night with the Driver autograph session at intermission.
