June 26, 2011 – by Cindy Lorenz - Daniel Bois couldn’t be denied Saturday night as he swept the Lucas Oil Can-Am Midgets’ 3rd race of the season at Grand Bend Speedway (ON). The night started for Bois by winning his heat race, then the 25 lap feature race, taking over the series ‘Point’s Lead’, and even his fiance’ won the 50/50.
Thanking Mark Moesker and Broadway Services of Wyoming, Ontario for sponsoring the race, and his sponsor, Muskoka Brewery, he especially wanted to give thanks to his car owner Cliff Walsh and crewman Don Noakes for the great setup of his car.
Barry Dunn had the pole for the start of the race with David Balych along side. Mack DeMan, winner of the last race at Lake Erie Speedway (PA) was third followed by Bois at the end of lap one. Starting in the 6th position at the drop of the green, Bois was headed to the front. By lap three Bois made his way around DeMan and began to reel in Balych. Balych was very strong on the straightaways but had trouble in the corners. With five laps in Bois caught and passed Balych and set sights for the hard charger Dunn. Dunn looked to be the class of the field as he stretched his lead but Bois’s car was set up to go anywhere in the tight 1/4 mile egg shaped oval. Catching Dunn in two more quick laps, Bois and Dunn exchanged the lead before the halfway point.
A caution came out for a spin by Darren McLennan allowing the field to close back up but Bois continued his lead as the green flew and took command over Dunn, Balych and Corey Moesker, who started in the tenth place and was now 4th. DeMan now rounded out the top five. Balych’s motor began to sour and he fell back in the field. Rob Neely, ‘point’s leader’ coming into the race, was now in the 5th spot.
Mike Westwood spun and broke in turn one with 8 laps to go. Neely passed DeMan at the restart and headed after Moesker. Both battled for the third spot as Bois walked away from the field. With four to go another caution came out for a spinning Earl Caine. Dunn could not catch Bois in the remaining laps and finished second. Moesker held off Neely for third and Todd Cresswell, who started the feature last, had a strong finish in the 5th spot.
Heats were won by Neely and Bois.
The Lucas Oil Can-Am Midgets head to Sauble Speedway (ON) for the Canadian Holiday Weekend, racing on Friday and Saturday night. On July 9th the ‘Dan May Memorial Race’ will be held at Flamboro Speedway (ON).
