Ontario Topless Sprints Finalizes 2013 Schedule; Announces Can Am Sprint Car Championship Series

By Craig Revelle – Finish Line Web Design – January 28, 2013 – A few short weeks ago, Ontario Topless Sprints released a tentative schedule for the 2013 season.  We are very excited to announce some new additions to our 2013 plans, including a four race Series with the OTS and the Michigan Traditional Sprints labeled appropriately as the Can Am Sprint Car Championship.

The 2013 season will get underway on Saturday, June 15th at South Buxton Raceway in Chatham, Ontario followed by Humberstone Speedway on Sunday, June 16th.  Both of these opening weekend events will count towards the regular OTS points as well as the Can Am Sprint Car Championship point standings.  The OTS gang will travel to Michigan on Friday, June 21st for the first of two dates at Tri-City Speedway in Auburn, Michigan, which will also be race number three in the Can Am Championships.

Fireworks will fill the sky as the OTS travels into Pennsylvania for a Holiday Weekend celebration at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, PA on Friday, July 5th and on to Sharon Speedway in Hartford, OH on Saturday July 6th.

OTS will resume action with a busy weekend of racing in August as they make their return to Tri-City Speedway in Auburn, Michigan for the final round of the Can Am Sprint Car Challenge Series on Friday, August 16th.  They will make their second visit to Sharon Speedway on Saturday, August 17th, and complete the busy weekend with their first ever appearance at Eriez Speedway in Erie, PA on Sunday, August 18th.

The season will come to a close in late September, but not before a pair of big events at Crystal Speedway in Crystal, Michigan for the Great Lakes Nationals on September 13th and 14th and the season finale on Saturday, September 28th at Pittsburgh Penn Motor Speedway where OTS will crown their inaugural champion.

“We are very excited about our 2013 schedule, and can’t wait to get the season underway”, says OTS President Ken Bayliss.  “We are thrilled about being able to crown a Series champion for the first time ever, and look forward to seeing who will be in the hunt for the Can Am Sprint Car Championship as well.  We are also excited about having our first OTS sanctioned race outside of Ontario when we visit Eriez Speedway in August”.

By Craig Revelle – Finish Line Web Design – January 8, 2013

After a couple seasons of testing the waters at local racetracks, the Ontario Topless Sprints are ready to kick into high gear with an aggressive 2013 schedule that will consist of five stand-alone OTS events, and several co-sanctioned events with the Michigan Traditional Sprints and the Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series.

The 2013 season will get underway with an action packed weekend at South Buxton Speedway on Saturday, June 15th and on to Humberstone Speedway on Sunday, June 16th. Just a week later, OTS teams up with the Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series for a Saturday, June 22nd date at Pittsburgh’s Penn Motor Speedway. The OTS-BOSS will continue with a co-sanctioned event at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pennsylvania as part of the Independence Day Weekend celebration, and another pair of co-sanctioned events at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio on July 6th and August 17th.

On September 13th and 14th, the Ontario Topless Sprints will join the Michigan Traditional Sprints for the Great Lakes Nationals at Crystal Speedway in Crystal, Michigan before finishing out the season with three stand-alone OTS events, including two at Brighton Speedway during Applefest Weekend on Friday September 20th and Saturday, September 21st.

Tentatively, the inaugural OTS champion will be crowned at South Buxton Speedway on Saturday, September 28th in the final event of the season. All OTS events, including the co-sanctioned events will be OTS points races and will count towards the overall championship.

Ontario Topless Sprints Has Big Plans For 2013 Season

Ontario Topless Sprints Has Big Plans For 2013 Season

By Craig Revelle – Finish Line Web Design – December 21, 2012 – The Ontario Topless Sprints was formed in 2011, and held their first event at

Humberstone Speedway that summer.  In 2012, the series progressed with a second event added to the schedule with South Buxton Speedway joining the OTS family.  2013 looks to be a very exciting season with as many as 10 different events, with several other tracks welcoming OTS for the first time.

OTS officials are still working on the details of the schedule and will be released on the website as soon as all events are finalized.

“We are extremely excited about the 2013 season.  This is what we have worked towards the past couple seasons, and with the help of all our great marketing partners we have been able grow this series over that period”, says OTS President Ken Bayliss.  “We have as many as 10 events scheduled, and with that we will now be a full series and will be able to crown a champion for the first time”.

Naida Wins Inaugural Wingless Sprint Race At South Buxton

Naida Wins Inaugural Wingless Sprint Race At South Buxton

By Mike Bennett –  South Buxton Raceway – Dain Naida holds the distinction of winning the last Southern Ontario Sprints feature at South Buxton Raceway.

And the Tecumseh, Mich., native added another historical note to his South Buxton resume on Saturday night – the first winner of a wingless sprint car event on the 3/8th-mile ‘D’-shaped oval.

Naida led all 25-caution free laps of the Can-Am Championship, which brought wingless sprints from three sanctioning bodies and a few independent drivers – including the winner – to South Buxton.

It was Naida’s first time driving without the wings on his 360-machine since he started driving sprints in the 1990s.

“The biggest difference is how it slides through the corners,” Naida compared Saturday’s ride to his winged sprint.

“This car is a lot more free. Without the wing, it tends to slide earlier, so you just have to time your slide better or else you just wash up the track and leave the bottom open.”

Naida survived a hairy first turn as he hit some mud at the bottom of the track going into turn one and shot up the track.

The veteran quickly regained control to get a great launch off of turn two and took the lead for good on the straightaway.

Mark Cassella, a driver from Weirton, West Virginia, passed Rick Wilson, from Joyceville, Ont., for second place on the second lap but was unable to mount any challenge for Naida.

Cassella, who won the first-half of the Canadian weekend doubleheader at Humberstone Speedway on Friday night, closed the gap as the leaders navigated through lap traffic but Naida was quickly able to widen his lead once they got back into open track.

Joe Bares, from Traverse City, Mich., finished third while Wilson came home fourth and Newmarket’s Dick Mahoney, a 2006 SOS winner at South Buxton, rounded out the top five.

Dick’s son Warren Mahoney, a 2008 SOS winner at South Buxton from Lefroy, finished sixth.

Another former South Buxton winner, Tilbury’s Kyle Patrick, finished 10th in the 14-car field.

Patrick started shotgun after missing his heat because of brake problems, incurred during the hot laps

Chatham’s Eric Jamieson, making his debut in a sprint car, finished 12th.

Naida’s experience at South Buxton obviously gave him an advantage, once he figured out the handling of his wingless ride.

Naida competed in the inaugural SOS event at South Buxton in May of 1996, a race won by fellow American Jerry Whitney.

Naida won the SOS’s third trip to South Buxton in August that same year, and won again in August, 2009 – the last SOS event held at the track.

He is unofficially the all-time sprint car mileage leader at South Buxton since his first visit here 16 years ago, competing in the SOS, Sprints On Dirt, All-Stars and Northern Summer Nationals before Saturday’s wingless debut.

He raced at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday, where he finished 16th in the ‘A’ Main and sits fifth in the Corr-Pak series standings.

“I decided to stop here on the way home … it’s only five minutes out of my way,” he smiled about the distance from the 401 to the track.

Ken Bayliss, president of the Ontario Topless Sprints, hosts of the Can-Am event, was hoping for 20-25 entries.

However, only 14 cars were on hand at South Buxton – two more than appeared at Humberstone a night earlier.

Four cars from the MTS and two from the Ohio-based Buckeye Outlaws made the trip to South Buxton.

Jim Payne, from Bryan, Ohio, and the West Virginian Cassella represented the Buckeye Outlaws at both South Buxton and Humberstone.

Joe Irwin, from Davidson, Mich., Mike Galadja, from Fenton, Mich. and Mike Baker, from Vicksburg, Mich., did the double duty from the MTS.

Bares, an MTS regular, made the long haul from Traverse City to race here Saturday.

While he was disappointed the car count fell short of his expectations, Bayliss was happy the numbers have grown for each of his three OTS events, which started with an 11-car field last August at Humberstone.

“It’s a growing process,” he said. “We had a lot of other sprint drivers watching this weekend who liked what they saw and say they want to try this next year.”

He also heard from several interested American teams who were interested but did not make the trip because drivers and crew members waited too long to get passports and enhanced drivers’ licenses.

“I’m already looking forward to next year where we’ll have 20-car fields,” said Bayliss, who is talking to more tracks about hosting events in 2013.

“I hope the fans enjoyed the show,” he said of Saturday’s event. “Hopefully we can come back twice next year.”

The third and final sprint show of the season takes place Saturday, Aug. 18 when the Northern Summer Nationals crowns its 2012 champion. The NSN holds their third event one night earlier at Ohsweken Speedway.

Justin Barger, a Patriot Sprint Series driver from Montrose, N.Y., won the first NSN race at South Buxton on June 23.

Naida finished fifth that night after starting mid-pack following the re-draw of the top heat finishers.

“Hopefully we’ll get a better starting position,” said Naida, who sits fourth in the NSN standings, seven points behind the leader Barger.

OTS Ready For Battle At Humberstone & South Buxton

OTS Ready For Battle At Humberstone & South Buxton

By Craig Revelle – Finish Line Web Design – July 17, 2012

The anticipation is building for local sprint car teams as the Ontario Topless Sprints 2012 season events are set to take place this coming weekend at Humberstone Speedway in Port Colborne, Ontario and South Buxton Raceway near Chatham, Ontario.  The action will begin at Humberstone on Friday night and then on to South Buxton Raceway on Saturday night for the first ever OTS experience.

Last year at Humberstone Speedway, 11 cars participated in the inaugural OTS race with Robbie Shuttleworth taking home the win.  This year, a much larger turnout is expected, and with weekend events at Humberstone Speedway and South Buxton Raceway, fans will be in for a treat as they witness the Ontario Topless Sprints battle for the $1000 to win payday.  Each event also pays a minimum of $250 to take the green, so even if you were to finish last each race, you would still take home $500.

“We are really excited about this weekend’s Ontario Topless Sprint events at Humberstone Speedway and South Buxton Raceway”, says series director Ken Bayliss.  “We have worked hard to make this event even better then last year, and we hope that the teams will come up and support us, and we can continue to build this series into something that everyone will want to be a part of”.

Friday night’s action at Humberstone Speedway will get underway at 7:15pm, with gates swinging open at 5pm.  On Saturday night at South Buxton Speedway, gates open at 5:30pm, with the first green flag taking place at 7pm.  For more information on either track, be sure to check out www.humberstonespeedway.com or www.southbuxtonraceway.com.

By Craig Revelle – Finish Line Web Design – January 17, 2012 – After a very successful inaugural event at Humberstone Speedway in 2011, the Ontario Topless Sprints are back for a new season on a much larger scale with events scattered throughout the summer at several different racetracks in Ontario, Pennsylvania and Ohio.

[VIEW 2012 ONTARIO TOPLESS SPRINT SCHEDULE]

The tentative schedule has the Ontario Topless Sprints (OTS) and the Ohio based Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series (B.O.S.S) working together during most of the events on the schedule, as well as one OTS standalone event on the schedule.  The OTS and B.O.S.S. will also have a co-sanctioned event with the Michigan Traditional Sprints (MTS).

The OTS season will get underway with a weekend doubleheader beginning at Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, Ohio on Friday, May 18th and Mercer Raceway Park in Mercer, Pennsylvania on Saturday, May 19th.  Just one event is on the schedule at this time during the month of June as OTS travels to Pittsburgh’s Penn Motor Speedway on Saturday, June 23rd.  July is the busiest month of the season for OTS with three events on the schedule with a visit to Sharon Speedway in Sharon, Ohio.  Another weekend doubleheader is on the card on July 20th and 21st as OTS holds events at South Buxton Raceway and Humberstone Speedway respectively.  After more than two months off, the series will then wrap up back at Wayne County Speedway for the 2012 season finale on Saturday, October 6th.

“We are very excited to announce our 2012 season schedule”, says Ontario Topless Sprints President Ken Bayliss.  “This is just a tentative schedule though, and we hope to be able to add some more events in the near future”.

In an effort to help build OTS as well as its sister site for the Ontario Outlaw Flat Trackers, www.ooft.ca – we will have a booth set up at the Canadian Motorsports Expo in Toronto, Ontario at the International Centre on February 10th, 11th and 12th.  Stop by and visit us and learn more about both the OTS and OOFT.

“We wouldn’t be able to do any of this without the help of the great companies that support us”, adds Bayliss, who will also be competing in the OTS events this season.  “I just can’t thank everyone enough for their support as we move into our first full season with the series.  We had a great time at our event at Humberstone in 2011, and look for an even better 2012”.
