We stumbled upon some cool clips this week, but we’re starting off with something we don’t get to see that much…

>> We love this angle that Mikey Kruchka got last Friday in Sprint Car action at Ohsweken Speedway:

>>
Darrell Lake works hard to promote his race team, and it’s obvious he’s put a lot of work into this video:

>> We like in-car videos which show the driver’s hands. It looks like Cole Landau had a handful on his way to a 2nd place finish in the Legends race at Grand Bend on June 9:

Most Ontario tracks race regularly on Fridays or Saturdays, but there are a handful running on “school nights” too. We feature those tracks in this week’s edition of the Video Vault…

>> Cornwall Motor Speedway packs the stands on many Sunday nights each season. Here are some highlights from the first few weeks of the season, including Stephane Lafrance’s big rollover:

>>
Capital City Speedway is underway with another season of Wednesday night racing. Here are some highlights from June 13:

>>
Laird International Raceway is another venue with mid-week racing, as they run regularly on Thursdays. Here we see Paul McLean going for a wild ride (which could have been wilder) on June 7:

>> A tip of the hat goes to Dave Bradley and the folks at Barrie Speedway for putting together these great weekly segments:

>>
Ohsweken Speedway’s season opened Friday night with good racing in all divisions, including this side-by-side action between Jack Myers and Cory Turner for a Thunder Stock heat race victory:

>>
We try not to have the same track on Video Vault in two consecutive weeks, but this video from Can-Am Motorsports Park is too good to miss. Keep an ear out for the names of several Ontario drivers who were regulars at the upstate New York facility more than 20 years ago:

>>
We enjoyed watching this clip of Billy Bleich, Jr. at work during a Humberstone Speedway practice session:

>>
Enduro racing is often under-appreciated, but lots of drivers and crew members head out to their local track for some fun each season. Here we ride with Tyssen Toll at Delaware Speedway:

>> ISMA Supermodified driver Mark Sammut of London, Ontario was one of a handful of racers who did some testing Tuesday night at Delaware Speedway:

>> Dan Kviring enlisted the help of Ray Sliter to shake down his Mod-Lite at Merrittville Speedway on Saturday night:

>> The 10 year anniversary of Allen Iverson’s famous “We talkin’ ‘bout practice” rant passed last week, which reminded us that while some tracks and series in Ontario are already racing, others are still in practice mode…

>> Thanks to Anthony Leek for sending us this clip of Modified practice from Emo Speedway. Make sure to turn up the volume on this one!

>> The OSCAAR series had a busy test day on Sunday at Sunset, and used some footage from that to make a commercial advertising their opening event of the 2012 season:

>> Ohsweken Speedway has three Test & Tune dates before the season starts. The OntarioOval crew visited the track on Friday night and filmed several interviews. We also got this short clip of on-track action…with a small camera we got for free, believe it or not:

>> Racers had another chance to test out Delaware Speedway’s changes on Saturday, and they’ve got some thoughts from the drivers up on the track’s YouTube channel:

>> Jake Ott had his new Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup car on the track at Varney Motor Speedway recently, in preparation for this Sunday’s series opener:

This week we managed to find some sort of video clip from almost every short track race held in Ontario last weekend. All we’re missing is something from Humberstone’s opener, so if you have a link, send it our way. You’ll notice most of this week’s videos are shot with on-board cameras – we want to thank all the drivers who are sharing their view of the action every week!

>> Rob Pietz is a mainstay at Merrittville Speedway. Here’s a good view of him wheeling his DIRTCar 358 Modified in a Saturday night heat race:

>>
Corey Earl has become one of the drivers to beat in Brighton Speedway’s Pro Late Model division, and he got the win in Saturday’s season opener. Here’s a view of that win from his roof:

>>
Four time Flamboro Speedway Mini-Stock champ Dave Bailey survived a couple of early scares to come home with a solid 3rd place on Saturday night:

>>
Gord Shepherd got his Barrie Speedway season off on the right foot, winning one of the Limited Late Model features on Saturday night, and finishing 4th in the other. Here’s his winning view:

This week we’ve got highlights from a variety of racing events which took place this past weekend…

>> In case you missed it, here’s our victory lane video with Pete Bicknell from Saturday’s “Spring Sizzler” at Merrittville…”Mr. Small Block” just keeps on winning year after year:

>> Flamboro’s Late Model racers opened their season on Saturday night, and Paul Howse got his season off on the right foot:

>> The ASCS Sprints on Dirt series opened the 2012 season at Crystal, Michigan on Saturday, and there were many familiar names in the field, including former SOS and Ohsweken Speedway champion Keith Dempster:

>> Attica, Ohio is a good place to be for Dirt Late Model action until the season opens in Ontario. Wallaceburg driver Chris Ross didn’t have the best of luck last Friday, as he had a hard crash which took part of the catch fence down:

>> A good field of cars helped to open the Empire Super Sprints season at New York’s Can-Am Motorsports Park on the weekend, including seven Ontario entries. Everyone ended up chasing Sammy Reakes IV, who enjoyed this view all evening:

This week we’re starting with a couple of clips submitted by readers. We’re always looking for suggestions and input, so please keep them coming!

>> We like it when our readers send us cool links. Here’s a Canadian Vintage Modified clip sent to us by Mike Williams:

>>
We’ve featured clips from Mack DeMan before, but he reminded us recently that he has some good stuff on his YouTube channel…like this clip which makes us think he’s a little bit crazy. Maybe it’s just us, but this reminds us a bit of IndyCar footage we’ve seen:

>>
Weather wreaked havoc on short tracks across the continent last weekend, but Flamboro Speedway managed to get some racing in. Here’s the conclusion to Saturday’s Pro 4 Modified feature:

>>
We started to feel nostalgic as we gear up for another racing season. We’re probably (definitely) biased because we saw this classic David versus Goliath story in person, but we think this race has to rank near the top of any list of the best short track races of all time. Side note – boy do we miss TNN, Steve Evans, American Sports Cavalcade, and Diamond P Motorsports:

>>
We are very happy to report that the rumours are not true, and Wonderland Speedway will in fact open for racing this year. A feature story is coming, but in the meantime here’s some racing action from Wonderland last fall:

Last week’s edition was all Modifieds, so this week we decided to go with all Late Models…

>> Here’s some Flamboro Speedway action from 2010 which aired on a local Cogeco cable channel. There are a few interesting camera angles in this clip:

>> Another interesting camera angle in this clip from last season at Barrie Speedway:

>> Many Delaware Speedway fans remember 2007 as one of the more memorable seasons for the Late Model division there in recent memory. Here’s a clip with some highlights from that season (with a hat tip to Jay Doerr for reminding us):

>> Late Models are often entertaining on bullrings like Varney Speedway. Watching this makes us wonder what OSCAAR will be like there:

We’ve found lots of videos of Modifieds racing at various Ontario tracks, so we decided to put a few together in one post for this week’s edition of the vault…

>> Merrittville Speedway runs 3 different Modified-type divisions each week, and also has an annual visit from the Super DIRTCar Big Block series. Here’s a great clip of Pat Ward Matt Sheppard dicing in a heat race:

>> We’re a bit disappointed that we won’t see the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour at Delaware Speedway this season. They put on a good show last year:

>> UMP Modifieds are always entertaining at South Buxton Raceway, and their numbers have been increasing over the past couple of seasons:

>> Modifieds race in all shapes and sizes in Ontario on pavement and dirt with V8’s and 4 cylinders. One of the more unique divisions in Ontario is the F4 Modified group which runs mainly at Flamboro Speedway (this one takes a few minutes to get going – we recommend skipping ahead):

Video Vault: Fun On A Smaller Scale

Video Vault: Fun On A Smaller Scale

The OntarioOval.com crew is going to duke it out on the kart track this weekend, so we thought we’d highlight some of the racers who run in smaller-scale divisions at our local tracks…

>> Racing a go-kart on the 3/8 mile Capital City Speedway looks like fun…but also completely insane!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0FApDhtTYU&feature=results_main&playnext=1&list=PL077DB4204A2F6826

>> The folks at FOG (Fat Old Guys) International Speedway in Tecumseh, Ontario know how to poke a little bit of fun at themselves, and they have a good time on the track too:

>> Caged karts are popular all over the province as well, including indoors at Chesterman Power Products in Tillsonburg:

>> We’ve lost track of how many great young racers have moved up from Merrittville Speedway’s weekly karting series:

>> Delaware Speedway’s Junior Racing League has also graduated some good talent from their half-scale stock car division:

This week we’re starting with a look back to last summer, when a local favourite made some headlines.

>> Local short track racing doesn’t always get a lot of attention on your local TV news, but the Busch brothers racing at Delaware Speedway last summer brought out the mainstream media. We were happy to see Jesse Kennedy steal the show that night:

>> So, you’re thinking racing a Vintage Modified might be a fun hobby for you? We don’t want to deter you, but here’s a good reminder that these guys (and girls) are not just out there for a Sunday drive – they race hard, and sometimes they crash too…

>> We always keep an eye on the Loudpedal Productions channel because they create some of the best short track racing videos you’ll find anywhere. Here’s their take on the 2012 Chili Bowl:

Video Vault: The Cornwall 500

by Tommy Goudge (March 21, 2012) – Welcome to “Video Vault” on OntarioOval.com, our weekly look at some of the great short track racing video clips from around the province, and beyond. We know there are lots of great videos out there, so make sure to contact us with your favourites.

This week we’re starting with a memorable night, which many who were there have dubbed the “Cornwall 500″.

>> One of the wildest races in Empire Super Sprints history took place at Cornwall Motor Speedway on June 19, 2005. The action starts (but doesn’t end) with Glenn Styres and Alain Bergeron crashing, and Styres hitting a backstretch billboard. Amazingly, both drivers rejoined the race to finish 12th and 13th:

>> Lots of fans in Eastern Ontario remember Randy Ritskes from his Modified racing days at Brockville. Here’s Randy talking about his latest escapades in Oswego Speedway’s Supermodified division:

>> We shared highlights from the Gambler’s Classic at Atlantic City, NJ last month, and many of the same drivers were in action in the “Coffee Cup” races inside the Dunkin Donuts Center in Rhode Island a couple of weeks ago. Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario’s Stewart Friesen swept both nights in Providence:

This week we’re starting with a great example of how racers improvise and make repairs while watching their budget.

>> This one is from a few years ago, but we just couldn’t resist showing you again. Here’s Flamboro Speedway Mini-Stock racer Rob Hoskins showing us how to make your own frame straightener:

>> Here’s something we’re going to keep an eye on. Driver Casey Shuman tested this electric midget car a few weeks ago at Ocala, Florida. Looks pretty fast!

>> No need to explain much about this one…we just think the Legends cars are fun to watch at Peterborough:

>> When it’s cold and windy, we like to watch (and listen!) to this clip and remember that racing season is just around the corner. We think this record may stand for awhile…

>> This one takes awhile to get going, but provides a cool view of some fast laps around Mosport Speedway in a Canadian Vintage Modified:

Video Vault: Summing Up Speedweeks

Video Vault: Summing Up Speedweeks

by Tommy Goudge (February 29, 2012) – Welcome to “Video Vault” on OntarioOval.com, our weekly look at some of the great short track racing video clips from around the province, and beyond. We know there are lots of great videos out there, so make sure to contact us with your favourites.

This week we hoped to include lots of video of Ontario racers going fast in Florida Speedweeks events, but finding footage has proven difficult. We’re hoping for some help from fans on this, so send your links to tommygoudge@ontariooval.com and we’ll post the best ones.

We do have a few videos to share this week though, starting with one that kind of sums up the week for most of the Ontario drivers who raced at New Smyrna.

>> Brandon Watson of Stayner, Ontario was fast all week at New Smyrna Speedway, but things didn’t really go his way.  It began with a win being taken away in tech, and also included this incident while challenging near the front of a feature:

>> Hamilton’s Mikey Kruchka has been to the Ronald Laney Memorial King of the 360’s before, but never as a driver. Here’s some on-board footage from his practice night:

>> Ohsweken Speedway owner Glenn Styres scored a surprise upset win in the King of the 360’s finale, and the $10,000 cheque that went with it. He did it in dramatic fashion by qualifying from a B-Main, and making a last corner pass for the win. Here are the last few laps of his big win:
