August 20, 2011 - Brockville, ON – Greg Oakes took another giant step towards clinching another Ontario Dirt Late Model championship on Saturday night at Brockville Ontario Speedway.  The Franklinville, NY driver led all 30 laps in taking the feature event and padding his lead atop the standings after the third race in the four race series.
 
Oakes started on the pole for the event, but it was far from easy as the early laps were caution filled.  First Oakes had to hold off former Brockville track champ Lee Gill, who pulled alongside a few times but couldnt complete the pass before spinning off the track in turn 3.  Then it was one time Brockville regular Dale Planck, for the final 20 circuits, who moved up quickly from his 9th starting position.  The Natural tried the bottom, the top and everything in between but Oakes held on for the win.  Chris Ross ran a consistent race for third in front of Carrey Terrance and Dale Glassford.
 
Kingston’s Mike Mainse picked his fourth win of 2011 in the Sportsman division.  Mainse grabbed the top spot from Brian Copp on a mid race restart going into turn one and then blasted away from the field from there.  Chris Herbison was second, while Dylan Evoy wrote the real story of the night.  Evoy came together with Sheldon Hoogwerf in turn 2 early in the race sending him to the back of the pack.  The Brockville teenager sliced and diced his way through traffic to finish third and hold off Herbison and Mainse in points chase as a result. Copp was a season best fourth with Steve Barber fifth.  Herbison also had a good night winning the special fans pick the drivers Bangma Concrete, 1000 Islands RV dash for cash.
 
Kevin Fetterly Jr took the 15 lap honours for the Street Stocks. Fetterly picked up the top spot when the leaders car stopped under caution and then held off a good stiff challenge from Darrick Eaton.  Corey White was a solid third in his maiden voyage at Brockville followed by Joe Woods and Nick Gauvreau.  Jean Marc Larose won yet again in the 16 lap Rookie main, but not without feeling the heat from Chris Bakker who put in his best run of the season for second.  Joe McNichols recovered late for third with early leader Ron Day and Trevor Gaucher rounding out the fast five.  Brian Comeau led from start to finish in the 15 lap Vintage race.  Jason Powers was second with the unretired Chico Dingwall coming through the field for third with Ryan Comeau and Paul Billings fourth and fifth respectively.
 
Brockville Ontario Speedway returns to action, next Saturday night, August 27th with the Patriot Sprints return to the fast quarter mile along with the 358 Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks and Rookies in the next to the last point night of the season.  The green flag drops at 7 pm.

Cornwall, Ont – Wednesday, August 17, 2011 – Martin Bélanger – The Cornwall Motor Speedway will be the host of the Ontario DIRT Late Models this Sunday night as this spectacular series will in Eastern Ontario for the weekend. The Modifieds, Pro-Stock, Semi-Pro with 2 features including a 25-lap event and the Mini-Stock will also be on the racing card.

Greg Oakes is the current leader in the ODLM championship in front of his long time rival Chris Ross, only 3 points separates both drivers, the 2011 champion will be crowned at Cornwall after the 35-lap event. The first 2 races attracted an average of 25 cars; the same field is expected this Sunday at Cornwall.

The Modifieds will again have an epic 30-lap battle in order to gain points for the coveted championship title. Stéphane Lafrance is the leader with 24 points more than Carey Terrance; both drivers had completely different results this past Sunday, giving Lafrance some breathing space in the lead. Points are still really close between Terrance and Laurent Ladouceur in fifth as 18 points are separating Terrance, Joel Doiron, Tim O’Brien and Ladouceur.

After a week off, the Pro-Stock class will be back with an action packed 20-lap race. Joey Ladouceur continues to lead the way with a 66 points edge over Corey Wheeler and 108 points on Dave Bissonnette in third.

The Semi-Pro class will be very busy as they will start the evening with the postponed 25-lap feature from last week; a 15-lap event is also on the schedule. Kevin Fetterly has whopping 118-point lead over rookie Michael McCargar. The points are really tight for the rest of the top 5 with only 8 points separating everyone.

At the start of the season, Ernie Cree had built himself a sizeable lead in the Mini-Stock championship, since then, this lead has melted as he only has 12 points over Mike Gaucher who has been one of the top guys lately in this category. With 2 points night left, each 12-lap event will be important

Again another great night of racing at the Cornwall Motor Speedway as the point`s battle are really entertaining.

By Mike Bennett – South Buxton Raceway – It took nine years for the Ontario Dirt Late Models to race at South Buxton Raceway, and if you asked the near capacity crowd, they’d love to see them back again this weekend!

Greg Oakes of Franklinville, N.Y., led all 30 laps to win the ODLM’s inaugural South Buxton event Saturday on the track’s 40th anniversary night.

A total of 28 late models from across Ontario and western New York state joined South Buxton’s own Windride Transportation UMP Late Models – and they gave the fans their money’s worth with five exciting preliminary races leading up to the thrilling ‘A’ main.

And even though he led from the drop of the green to the wave of the checkered, it was no Sunday drive for Oakes.

“It definitely was hair raising,” Oakes said, as the race went caution-free for the first 18 laps as the leaders had to deal with lapped cars for more than a dozen circuits.

“We got into some heavy lap traffic but fortunately we were able to roll on the bottom, keep the car straight and stay out of trouble.”

If dealing with the traffic wasn’t difficult enough, Oakes was getting heavy pressure from Blenheim’s Andrew Reaume and Lee Gill, from Lafargeville, N.Y.

Oakes said he knew he had company, but had no idea who was on the tail of his No. 22 machine.

 “I had a guy keeping an eye on things for me but I didn’t dare look at him with so much going on the race track,” he said of his spotter.

“He was trying to tell me that they were closing in … so I was kind of happy to see that first caution so we could get out of that mess,” Oakes said.
On the restart, the front runners finally had open track but no one had anything for Oakes.

Reaume was able to close the gap a couple of times but couldn’t mount a challenge as he settled for second.

Ridgetown’s Adam, West moved up one spot when Gill exited with mechanical issues and equalled his best ODLM finish with a third. West finished third at Cornwall in 2009.

Chris Ross, of Charing Cross, finished in fourth following a second-place finish to Gill a week earlier at Brighton Speedway. Greg Belyea, of Sterling, rounded out the top five.

Although it was Oakes’ first trip to South Buxton, it didn’t take him long to adapt to South Buxton’s unique ‘D’-shaped oval.

“Mercer (Raceway Park) is somewhat like this, it’s the same shape but it’s quite a bit bigger,” Oakes said of a similar track in Pennsylvania.

“This place is definitely racy,” he said of South Buxton.

“You can run all over the track. That’s all you can ask for … give me a race track that you can race side-by-side.”

Despite heavy rain in the area Thursday and Friday, the track began drying out during the ODLM heats. The surface remained dry-slick after getting watered down during the intermission.

“I like the dry-slick. We’ve been really working on our slick set up and it seems we really shine,” said Oakes, the 2008-09 series champion.

“I heard some guys complaining about how slippery it was, but the bottom line, we only had about three cautions and the racing was pretty good. I had no problems,” Oakes said.

While Oakes succeeded in his South Buxton debut, the third-place finish was as rewarding as win to West in his first ride at his familiar track in a late model.

 “It was great,” said West, a two-time winner at South Buxton in the Southern Ontario Sprints.

“I drove the track kind of like I do the sprint car … just kept it straight on the bottom and it worked out well.

“The car might have worked better if I would have went up high but I kind of chickened out and just kept it in line … and if guys wanted to pass me, they’re were going to earn it around the top.”

West said he has not had a good season in his sprint car, which included suffering a broken nose when a large piece of clay crushed the window screen into his visor. He also crashed and finished 16th in last week’s ODLM race at Brighton.

“The way the year has gone between the stock car and sprint car, I was happy to the checkered flag at the end of the night,” he said about his rash of DNFs.

“It’s just been a brutal year. We’re fast every where we’ve been. We’re still encouraged or else we would have pulled the plug a long time ago.

“But this is our potential, running third and hopefully we can keep it the rest of the year.”

The four-event ODLM series concludes with back-to-back dates at Brockville on Saturday, Aug. 20 and Cornwall on Sunday, Aug. 21.

By Greg Calnan – Brighton, ON (Saturday, August 28th) – The Ontario Dirt Late Models were delayed  by one week in completing the tours 2010 schedule, but for David Scott of Garland, Pennsylvania it was worth the wait. Scott cruised to his third win of the season and captured the series championship in the process.

The 30 lap main event featured hometown driver Charlie Sandercock on the pole with Mark Glassford on the outside. When the green flag dropped and the racing began it was apparent the points contenders would make their way to the front quickly. Points leader Scott started 7th, one row behind second place point man Greg Oakes. The two drivers along with Chad Valone charged towards the front. Three early race cautions slowed the opening laps of the race, but by lap 6 Scott moved passed Sandercock for the top position.

The most spectacular crash of the evening came on lap 9 when Jim Jones and Andrew Hennessy tangled. Hennessy’s #87 was sent rolling over on the backstretch. Both cars were heavily damaged and unable to continue.

When the racing resumed it was Scott, Valone, Sandercock, Oakes and Lee Gill running in the top five. Sandercock was strong all evening and gave the defending champion Oakes a run for his money. Eventually Oakes would move past the #57 and into the top three. This set up the top three in points to duel it out for the race win.

A pair of lap 20 cautions for spins by Andrew Reaume and Phil Potts bunched the field for the final ten laps. Scott was hooked up on the bottom groove and pulled away from the rest of the field. The biggest scare of the night for the point leader came with just two laps to go as Rob Perry hooked an infield barrier and looped the car wildly right in front of Scott. The pilot of the #3 was able to make a quick maneuver though to avoid colliding with the lapped car and kept the lead for the final restart.

When the green came back out on lap 28 Scott again powered away from car owner and teammate Valone for the win. The victory helped clinch the 2010 Ontario Dirt Late Model Championship for the Pennsylvania driver. The unofficial margin of victory was 10 points over Oakes and 29 over Valone.

By Greg Calnan – After a one week delay due to rain the Ontario Dirt Late Models will get back to action at Brighton Speedway in Brighton, Ontario on Saturday, August 28th. The event will be one to remember as the 2010 series champion will be crowned. #3 David Scott of Garland, Pennsylvania, who has two wins on the season, holds a slim 5 point advantage over defending series champ #22 Greg Oakes of Franklinville, New York. Scott’s teammate #2v Chad Valone sits third in the standings just 25 markers back of the top spot.

The annual visit to Brighton Speedway is always a popular one and this years edition should be no different. In 2010 the speedway brought back the Late Model division to its weekly racing card and the results have been positive. Many of the weekly regulars plan to compete with the ODLM which should create yet another large car count for the series.

In 2009, Chris Ross piloted his #18r Late Model to the win at the Brighton Speedway over John Lobb and Greg Oakes. The third place finish for Oakes capped off his second straight ODLM title. Fast forward to 2010 and the driver of the Pioneer Propane #22 is knocking on the door of a three-peat. Although he has managed to rack up two seconds and a third place finish this season, David Scott has been nearly unbeatable with two wins and a third. With only one race left to settle it and just five points separating the top two drivers the championship could come down to the final lap.

Also this Saturday the Eastern Ontario Vintage Stock Car Club makes it’s first appearance of 2010 after being rained out back in June.  Many of these classics that raced back in the day will be on hand Saturday Night to show they can still race door handle to door hanlde and mix it up with the best of them!

The Ontario Dirt Late Models held an online contest over the past month to give away a pair of tickets to the series finale at Brighton Speedway on Saturday, August 21st. On Friday, August 13th the draw was held and a winner was announced.
