Southern Ontario Sprints Release 2013 Schedule

Southern Ontario Sprints Release 2013 Schedule

The schedule for the eighteenth season of competition is now set for the Southern Ontario Sprints (SOS). This year will see the SOS visit 5 different tracks in 2013, returning to one for the first time in a while and competing at one for the first time ever. As well, the SOS continues the tradition as an affiliate sanctioning body for the 9th annual Canadian Sprint Car Nationals.

It all gets underway on the first long weekend of the summer, Saturday, May 18th as Brighton Speedway hosts the season opener for the travelling stars of the Southern Ontario Sprints.

Brighton Speedway, the long standing unofficial home of the Southern Ontario Sprints, will host races each month with the SOS returning in June on Saturday, June 8th and in July on Saturday, July 13th to the speedway by the lake.

August will really heat things up for the SOS with events occurring every weekend of the month leading up to the Championship finale on Labour Day weekend at Brighton Speedway.

Saturday, August 3rd will see the Southern Ontario Sprints return to South Buxton Raceway to headline the evening’s events. The SOS’s first race was Saturday, May 18th, 1996 at South Buxton Raceway and 2013 will see the Southern Ontario Sprints return for the 32nd time to the premiere dirt track of Western Ontario.

The SOS is Ontario’s travelling sprint car series and teams will next head back down the 401 to the eastern end of the province to visit Brighton Speedway once again on Saturday August 10th.

The next three races will see the Southern Ontario Sprints racing in competition on three different tracks. First up the Southern Ontario Sprints will face off against the weekly racers of Ohsweken Speedway on their ultra fast 3/8mile home turf Friday, August 16th.

The following weekend will see the Southern Ontario Sprints in double header action against the American invader Patriot Sprint Tour group.
The first night will be Saturday, August 24th at Brockville Speedway.
The SOS visited Brockville Speedway for the first time in 2008 when Steve Poirier won on a rainy Saturday in the 28fm. The excitement will really pick up on Sunday, August 25th when the Southern Ontario Sprints will roll into Cornwall Motor Speedway to hold a race for the first time. Cornwall Motor Speedway is a tight ¼ mile track filled with passionate fans that backs onto the 401. The SOS and PST will jam the pits Sunday night for this action packed event!

Once again, the Southern Ontario Sprints points championship will be decided at Brighton Speedway as part of the Labour Day Classic weekend of events. A full night of racing will be run on Saturday, August 31st including the “Dream Come True” Dash where one driver will get their first ever win in a Sprint Car. Sunday with be a full day of fun including a tailgate party, race car show and autograph session before the Championship is settled Sunday night, September 1st.

The SOS was one of the original affiliate sanctioning bodies for the Canadian Sprint Car nationals and will continue that tradition for the ninth annual race at Ohsweken Speedway. The CSCN is the largest Sprint Car event in Canada. The Nationals attract some of the biggest names in
360 sprint car racing from across Canada and the United States. This year’s CSCN will be held Friday, September 13th & Saturday, September 14th and will pay $13,000 to the winner.

SOS Honours Lee Ladouceur As 2012 Champion

SOS Honours Lee Ladouceur As 2012 Champion

London, Ontario (December, 2012) – The seventeenth season of Southern Ontario Sprints competition came to a conclusion on Saturday, November 24th as the club honoured 2012 champion Lee Ladouceur at the annual SOS awards banquet held, once again this season, at the Best Western Cairn Croft Hotel in Niagara Falls.

An energetic group of racers, friends and family gathered together for an enjoyable evening and to salute the top 15 in 2012 SOS points who took home point fund money and sponsor products. Special achievements and awards were also presented to:

Four Wide Photos Best Appearing Car Award – Bob Crawford

Klotz Canada Hard Charger Award – Lee Ladouceur

Wiseco Piston Perfect Attendance – Mike Ferrell

Dave MacLeod Mechanic of the Year Award – Sebastien Chabot

The Club Founders Rookie of the Year Award – Charlie Sandercock

2012 Southern Ontario Sprints championship standings 15th to 11th were:

15th – Bob Crawford #10

14th – Dick Mahoney #79

13th – Glenn Styres #0

12th – Brad Lodge #2

11th – Frank Baranowski #66

The Top Ten in 2012 Southern Ontario Sprints Points were:

10th – Jim Munsie #9 The 2010 Rookie of the year had a steady season in 2012 with a top ten finish on May 19th at Brighton Speedway. “The Ol’ Buzzard” is already hard at work for next season and is looking forward to big things for 2013.

9th – Mike Ferrell #15 After a three year hiatus from competition, the SOS President returned to the drivers seat in 2012 and competed in every event on the schedule.

8th – Charlie Sandercock #57 A local stand out in the Late Model field at Brighton Speedway, Charlie Sandercock tried his hand at sprint car racing for the first time in 2012 and showed that he was equally adept at driving without fenders. Charlie won a heat race at the July 14th Brighton Speedway race in front of the home town crowd, had 5 top ten finishes for the year and took home the 2012 SOS Rookie trophy.

7th – Chris Durand #67 Chris started off the year strong with a 3rd place finish at Brighton Speedway May 19th but suffered an up and down season with some trouble at Ohsweken Speedway mid season. Chris came back strong and finished the year with a pair of 6th place finishes Labour Day weekend and looks to be a contender for 2013.

6th – Rick Wilson #42w The Southern Ontario Sprints winning-est driver continued to add to his total this season with 2 wins at Brighton Speedway. “The Joyceville Jet” has won at least 1 SOS feature each season since 2001, the longest streak of any SOS driver.

5th – Warren Mahoney #25 The all time SOS points leader with 22,496 points, “Wiley” Warren started with his season up in the air, literally as he did a tail tank spin May 19th at Brighton Speedway. But he settled in for the long haul to take home a heat race win and 5th place in the championship standings. Warren will also replace his father Dick in the position of Vice-President after being voted in for 2013.

4th – Adam West #30 After finishing outside of the top ten in 2011, the 2005 SOS Champion came back strong with 2 top fives, 4 top tens and 2 heat race wins in 2012 to finish 4th. “Batman” hopes to have more strong finishes in the 2013 season as he goes for a second championship.

3rd – Dain Naida #07x Hailing all the way from Tecumseh, Michigan, Dain had a very successful year driving the 07x for Hill’s Racing. With 2 feature wins in 2012 at Brighton Speedway and 7 top ten finishes, Dain had a very strong season with the Southern Ontario Sprints.

2nd – Keith Dempster #5 The 2000 and 2002 SOS Champion competed once again with the SOS driving for Styres Racing in 2012. A steady performance all season with 1 top five and 5 top ten finishes led Keith to the runner up spot in the championship. 2013 will surely see the former champ looking to add to his win total on his way to regaining the top spot.

2012 Champion – Lee Ladouceur #51 In 2011 Lee Ladouceur came to race with the SOS and quickly made a name for himself as a top driver and consistent finisher. Hard work and determination won him the 2011 Championship. 2012 saw the continuation of that hard work and driving talent rewarded with back to back championship seasons; only the second time in 17 seasons that a champion has been able to successfully defend the title. Sebastien Chabot, the chief mechanic on the 51 team, was awarded the Dave MacLeod Mechanic of the Year Award for 2012.

Congratulations to the 2012 SOS Champion Lee, Donna and their team. The SOS looks forward to Lee’s defense of the title in 2013.

Also recognized and thanked for their support and contributions to the Southern Ontario Sprints in 2012 were:

Web Site/Media – Greg Calnan, Mike Dougherty Competition Director – Cliff Williams Pit Steward – Loree Ferrell Track Marshall & Crew – Neil McKay, Bill Mansbridge Tech Inspector – Neil McKay Merchandise – Judy & Ron Ferrell, Hailey Sanderson

2012 Board of Directors – Ed Lodge, Bob Crawford, Warren Mahoney, Adam West

In their honour a brick will be inscribed at the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame & Museum. The club wishes Dick and Helen all the best and thanks them for their years of service.

Wilson Wins The Battle; Ladoceur Wins The War

Wilson Wins The Battle; Ladoceur Wins The War

By Angie Rinaldi & Mike Ferrell (Sept 3, 2011) – SOS fans enjoyed an entertaining Sunday afternoon at Brighton Speedway with a race car show, dunk tank, Pig Roast and Bouncy castle for the children among the activities available to enjoy before the nights racing action would get underway. A full field of 24 Sanderson Tire & Automotive Southern Ontario Sprints hit the track for night two of the Labour Day Classic Extravaganza. The #9nz of Harvard Daniels certainly had the longest trip of anyone that night coming all the way from New Zealand to team up with the #11T of Jamie Turner to make their first starts with the SOS. #51 Lee Ladouceur had his eye on the Championship title with a 78 point lead going into the final event over #5 Keith Dempster. Ladouceur would just need to have consistent night to win his second title in as many years.

Heat races Sunday night would go to the #01k of Mike Kruchka, coming on strong with the SOS in the first heat. #57 Charlie Sandercock, rookie of the year contender and Brighton Speedway latemodel stand out, took the second heat. With #0 Glenn “The Ohsweken Flyer” Styres taking home the third heat win.

Sunday night’s redraw for the Sprint Cars took place on the front straight where a select number of children pulled for the top 9 positions on behalf of the drivers. As luck would have it the children pulled the #0 of Glenn Styres and the #07x of Dain Naida for the front row again, with home town favourite Charlie Sandercock and the “Joyceville Jet” Rick Wilson making up the second row.

In a replay of Saturday night, Styres broke out to the early lead followed by Naida, Wilson and then Sandercock. On lap 8 the four drivers started to hit lap traffic and Naida once again was all over Styres. The two swapped the lead a few times with Styres on the bottom and Naida in the middle until Wilson came through on the high side and made it a three car battle for the lead. It took Wilson a few laps but he eventually worked his way around the two and took over the lead. Styres remained second but with lap traffic the two remained close with Styres just waiting for Wilson to make the slightest mistake. Meanwhile the battle for third heated up with Sandercock working his way underneath Naida and the 01K of Mikey Kruchka starting to work Saturday night’s winner Naida over for fourth. As the laps wound down, Wilson was flawless in lapped traffic and picked up his first win since May and his 21st victory at Brighton Speedway. Styres came home second and Sandercock got his first Sprint Car podium finish coming home third. Kruchka got by Naida in a drag race to the line to finish fourth and fifth respectively. Points leader Lee Ladouceur finished in ninth position securing his second Southern Ontario Sprints Championship and becoming only the second driver in SOS history to win back to back championships, duplicating the feat achieved by Glenn Styres in 2007 and 2008.

NOTES

Congratulations to 2012 SOS Champion Lee Ladouceur. Lee and the top 10 for 2012 will be honoured at the SOS Annual Awards Banquet November 17th at the Cairn Croft Inn in Niagara Falls. All are welcome to attend. Ticket info and details will be announced shortly on the SOS website.

Sunday night was also “Topless” night at Brighton Speedway and featured a non-wing sprint car dash race. #5 Keith Dempster picked up the win narrowly holding of the driver that beat him on the points standings #51 Lee Ladoucuer.

Join the SOS for the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals at Ohsweken Speedway September 14th, 15th. Information on the event and tickets can be found at www.ohswekenspeedway.com

Dain Naida Wins On Night One Of Labour Day Classic

Dain Naida Wins On Night One Of Labour Day Classic

By Angie Rinaldi & Mike Ferrell (Sept 2, 2011) – Labour Day weekend 2012 brought beautiful weather to Brighton Speedway where the campers rolled in all day Saturday and the fans filled the grandstand to capacity. The racers also flocked to the one third mile speedway looking for an exciting double header weekend with 22 cars entering for Saturday nights Sanderson Tire & Automotive Sprint Car feature.

The weekend started off with a bang for rookie of the year contender Charlie Sandercock, but not the kind he wanted as his motor blew up in hot laps leaving him on the sidelines for the evening. The #2 of Brad Lodge continued to suffer ill effects from a bad wreck at Oshweken Speedway and the crew worked feverishly all night to get the car to fire.

A special moment in the evening happened during the Four Wide Design “Dream Come True” Dash, an event for sprint car drivers who have never won before. Mike Ferrell #15 lead rookie #11z Zack Zumpe to the line. As the pair rounded the first turn, the #11z of Zumpe barrel rolled and to the crowds astonishment, land on its wheels and drive away. Unfortunately the car suffered from the amazing feat and Zumpe retired from the race. With the #2 of Lodge still unable to start, that left Ferrell and #66 Frank Baranowski to battle it out. Baranowski got the edge on the start and held a thin lead with Ferrell working hard to get by. Baranowski never looked back and crossed under the checkered flag for the win, his first in a sprint car career that started in 2002.

The start of the feature saw a pair of Ohsweken Speedway regulars, #0 Glenn Styres and #07x Dain Naida, on the front row. At the green it was Styres that jumped out to the early lead with Naida trailing and the #42w of Rick Wilson in third place. Styres’ sprint car was on rails and he looked like the car to beat as he worked his way through lapped traffic with Naida continuing to poke his nose on the high side as Styres ran down low. With three laps to go, Naida finally grabbed the lead with a run off the high side and held on for his second win of the season at Brighton Speedway and his first ever Labour Day Classic Weekend win. Behind Naida, Styres came home second and Wilson held on for the final podium position with a third place finish. The #01K of Mikey Kruchka made his second appearance of the season at Brighton and came home 4th place, while #30 Adam West crossed the line next for a top five finish.

Michigan’s Dain Naida Wins With The SOS At Brighton Speedway

(SOS Release – August 6 2012) Fans filled the stands Saturday in anticipation of the seventh race of the Southern Ontario Sprints 2012 season at Brighton Speedway on Star 93.3 night. The weather was hot and the action on the track was even hotter as eighteen SOS drivers put on a fast paced show that went green to checker without a caution.

#11 Chris Jones and #07 Dain Naida led the field to green in the Sanderson Tire and Automotive feature event. Jones a local favorite jumped out to the early lead on the low side and Naida would work the high side. Jones would hold the lead till lap 6 when Naida would take the lead coming out of turn four. Jones would not give up easily though and battled back to the lead on lap eight however that would be short lived as the two leaders would start to approach lapped traffic. Jones would get caught up on the bottom while Naida would find a hole through the busy lapped traffic. By the half way mark Naida had grabbed the lead and did not look back as he started to check out on the field. Naida crossed the line for the checker flag in the green to checker event. Jones maintained second under pressure from the previous winner #7x Jamie Collard while #51 Lee Ladouceur and #57 Charlie Sandercock would make their way around the #42 Rick Wilson into forth and fifth respectively.

Glenn Styres Conquers SOS Summer Showdown At Brighton

Glenn Styres Conquers SOS Summer Showdown At Brighton

(SOS Release – July 16 2012) – A full house filled the stands at Brighton Speedway on Saturday as Watson Building Supplies and Aaron Auto presented the first ever Southern Ontario Sprints Summer Showdown brought to you by Ultramar. Up for grabs was a top prize of $2,500.00 to the winner of the 25 lap main event, which was the biggest payout ever for an SOS event.

The action on the track was as hot as the weather; the track was in great shape to start the night for the heats that saw Warren Mahoney and local rookie Charlie Sandercock take home the heat wins assuring themselves of spots in the redraw. However it was the #0 Glen Styres who finished third place in his heat, putting him in the redraw for starting position, and was able to pull out the poll position pill to start up front in the main event. Styres who has ten feature wins to his credit at Brighton would start alongside current point leader and 2011 SOS Champion Lee Ladouceur.

For the initial green flag of the first ever Watson Building Supplies, Aaron Auto and Ultramar SOS Summer Showdown, Glenn “the Ohsweken Flyer” Styres would start on the bottom with Ladouceur on the high side however it didn’t take long for the two drivers to switch positions and Styres would go right to the top while Ladouceur would drop to the inside and run right down on the inside marker tires. The summers pounding heat had taken its told on the race track and left a super slick surface over most of the racing groove leaving the drivers scrambling to find a line with some bite. The two would stay that way for some time while #42 Rick Wilson would be close in tow trying both the high side and low side trying to find a line that would allow him to gain on the two leaders. #57 of Charlie Sandercock in only his third sprint car race was working to improve on his sixth place starting spot and would make his way around the #25 Warren Mahoney and #30 Adam West. Sandercock would then start to apply pressure to Wilson and would try and work underneath him. Sandercock was actually able to pass Wilson coming out of turn two and going into turn three however Wilson would rocket off the high side of turn four and take back the advantage. The duo waged this exciting battle for a number of laps and Wilson would actually have to change his line and move to the bottom of turns 1 and 2 in order to take Sandercock’s line away and keep him behind him. Meanwhile out front Styres was cruising along with a 4 car lead over Ladouceur when the two would start to encounter lapped traffic. The slower cars would trip Styres up just a bit as he moved around the #15 of Mike Ferrell and the #66 Frank Baranowski. “General” Lee Ladouceur was closing in and charging hard with two laps to go as Styres would close in on #2 Brad Lodge and #9 Jim Munsie. Styres would pass Lodge on the high side as they came to the white flag and would come up behind Munsie. Styres would have to lift going into turns one and two and Ladouceur was right on his back bumper. The three cars raced up the back straight going into turn three and Munsie would push up a little high into four opening up the bottom for Ladouceur where he had been so good all night. Coming out of turn four it was a drag race to the line with the cars crossing three wide in a photo finish! The crowd sat silent waiting in anticipation for announcer Huck Flindall to let them know the official scorers decision and moments later there was a roar from the crowd as he announced Styres was the official winner.

The win marked Styres 11th all time win at Brighton Speedway but his first since Labour Day Weekend of 2009. Ladouceur’s strong run strengthens his points lead in the SOS Championship chase with five events left on the SOS schedule. The two drivers also qualify for the 10 lap “Ohsweken Shootout” on September 14th during Canadian Sprint Car Nationals weekend. The shootout pits two drivers from each of the 5 co-sanctioning Canadian Nationals organizations plus two “Wild Card” entries in the first race of the weekend.

SOS Recap: Barger Dominates Nothern Summer Nationals Round 2

SOS Recap: Barger Dominates Nothern Summer Nationals Round 2

(London, Ontario – June 25 2012) – Night two of the double header weekend saw the Southern Ontario Sprints head west to South Buxton Raceway Saturday night with SOS drivers making up almost half of the 27 cars entered for the evening, the second of four co-sanctioned Northern Summer Nationals events.

Bob Crawford was the only SOS regular to not make the trip to South Buxton after suffering rear end issues at Ohsweken Speedway the night before.

The stands were packed to capacity as the fans showed their support of sprint car racing in western Ontario, taking advantage of one of only 2 chances to see the winged warriors in action at their end of the province.

Glenn Styres, former SOS Champion, would again get the night started in the right direction by winning his heat race.

SOS vice president and long time competitor, Dick Mahoney 79, put another mark in the win column taking the ‘B’ Main to transfer into the main event.

#2 Brad Lodge qualified for the ‘A’ Main but was unable to start due to mechanical issues.

The 25 lap feature was won by 5b Justin Barger from New York state, an ESS regular. The 07x Dain “The Michigan Traveler” Naida was the top finishing Southern Ontario Sprints regular in 5th place, earning him a $100 bonus sponsored by Glenn Styres and Ohsweken Speedway for being the highest finishing SOS driver.

SOS Recap: Zimbardi Wins Nothern Summer Nationals Round 1

SOS Recap: Zimbardi Wins Nothern Summer Nationals Round 1

(London, Ontario – June 25 2012) – The Southern Ontario Sprints rolled into Ohsweken Speedway Friday night to join the weekly racers from Ohsweken Speedway’s sprint car division and the top drivers from the USA Patriot Tour for the first of four co-sanctioned Northern Summer Nationals events.

The fans looking for large car counts and fast action were not disappointed with 47 teams filling the pits on a sunny Friday evening.

Among the drivers competing in the event was Two-time NHRA funny car champion Cruz Pedregon who tried his hand at driving a sprint car. Cruz hit the back stretch wall in the ‘B’ Main and did not finish however he was added to the ‘A’ Main as the promoter’s option and ended the night 21st.

The night got off to a good start for track owner and former SOS champion Glenn Styres, winning his heat race and transferring directly to the ‘A’ Main.

Current SOS points leader Lee Ladouceur and Warren Mahoney wouldn’t be as lucky in their heat races. However, they each easily won their respective ‘B’ Mains to take them to the main event.

The 25 lap feature was won by #35 Jared Zimbardi from New York state, a PST regular. “General” Lee Ladouceur was the top finishing Southern Ontario Sprints regular in 6th place, earning him a $100 bonus sponsored by Glenn Styres and Ohsweken Speedway for being the highest finishing SOS driver.

NOTES

– Point standings have been corrected to reflect an oversight in registration at Granby.

Jamie Collard Races To Victory At Brighton Speedway

Jamie Collard Races To Victory At Brighton Speedway

(SOS Release – Mike Ferrell with Race Report by Angie Rinaldi) – The Southern Ontario Sprints made their last stop at Brighton Speedway Saturday before heading west for the next two events. Jamie Collard stepped up to conquer the slick track and stop Rick Wilson’s winning streak at three.

22 teams filled the pits on a sunny Saturday evening but the evening would get off to a cloudy start for two unfortunate teams. Chris Jones arrived to the track late, scrambling to recover from a blown engine the week before only to have the brand new motor let go in hot laps. The second blown motor in two weeks was a major disappointment to the points leader.

Chris Durand made the 5 hour journey from Pt. Stanley, Ontario after repairing the car from a flip the previous week at Ohsweken Speedway only to have the Magneto fail as they tried to start the car forcing them to retire before even taking a green flag.

The SOS also welcomed Mitch Brown in the #10b who competed for his first time with the tour.

At feature time the Sanderson Tire and Automotive Repair Southern Ontario Sprints hit the track with #30 Adam West and #98 Paul Pekkonen starting on the front row. Pekkonen jumped out to the early lead but it wasn’t long before second row starter 7x Jamie Collard worked around the top side of West and then took the lead from Pekkonen on lap three. The top three stayed that way for a number of laps with Collard, Pekkonen and West but the #0 Glen “the Ohsweken Flyer” Styres was on the move and working hard on West for third. Styres would get by West and then Pekkonen, moving into second and was starting to close in on Collard in lapped traffic. It was a straight green flag run right from lap 1 and it looked it might go green to checker. Styres was continuing to close on Collard but knew time was running out and was pushing the high side to the limits when on lap 16 he would jump the cushion and end up spinning off of turn three for the first and only caution of the race. On the restart, with a cushion of three lapped cars between him and second place #71 Travis Cunningham, Collard would break out to a lead and would not look back for his first win of 2012 with the SOS and at Brighton Speedway. Cunningham held on to second but not without a fight as he battled 2011 SOS Champion #51 Lee Ladouceur who came home third. The rookie Charlie Sandercock, who was doing double duty in his Late Model, started the feature at the tail and ended in 9th climbing 11 positions in his second sprint car race ever.

NOTES

– The fastest tour in Ontario next joins the ESS, PST and Ohsweken Speedway weekly racers for the Northern Summer Nationals Series at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday, June 22nd and South Buxton Raceway on Saturday, June 23rd..

Collard Returns To SOS Victory Lane At Brighton Speedway

Collard Returns To SOS Victory Lane At Brighton Speedway

For Immediate Release – By Angie Rinaldi – It was a beautiful sunny day at Brighton Speedway as Vanderlaan Building Supplies presented round two of the Southern Ontario Sprint Cars along with Late Models, Canadian Modifieds, Comp 4 and Stingers.  22 Sprint Cars filled the pits and a large crowd filled the stands in anticipation of a great night of racing ahead.  Early in the night before the race began the 2012 Wall of Fame inductions took place.  This year’s inductees were long time racers #K1 Karl Kleinsteuber and #33 George Pettingill.  Also inducted was long time track supporter and crew member for a number of drivers over the past 40 years Brian Weese.

After some great heat racing in all classes by 8:30 it was time to start the main events and the first feature up would be the Quinte Septic Stingers.  #06 Steve wells would lead from start to finish but not without challenge, #19 Del MacGregor would hound Wells for the top spot for the whole race and would get close but would not be able to seal the deal.  Wells would go on to his first victory of 2012 in the stingers.

The Vanderlaan Building Supplies Late Models would be up next for their 30 lap main event.  The #77 Caley Weese and # 75 Beau Brown would start on the poll and the two would battle it out side by side for the first few laps when #42 Adam Nayler would work his way under Brown and work on Weese for the lead.   By lap 5 Nayler would get under Weese as she bobbled on the high side and take the lead, #57 Charlie Sandercock would also take advantage of Weese’s mistake and move into second.  The caution would fly on lap 12 for #20 Terry Hunt as he spun in turn two.  This would set up Nayler and Sandercock side by side on the restart.  Nayler would get the jump on the low side and maintain a narrow lead over Sandercock who was rim riding around the top side of the track until lap 17 when #29 of Phil Potts would hit the front straight wall coming out of turn 4 ending the night for his Fowl Mood Race team.  On the restart it would again me Nayler and Sandercock but now #11 “Mr. Consistency” Corey Earl had jumped up into third to get in the mix.  On the restart the three would maintain the same with Nayler and Earl working the bottom while Sandercock was up high.  Just as Sandercock was able to make his way around Nayler the caution would come out yet again.  This time for a spin between Weese and the #97 Zeke McKeown hand Nayler the lead back.   The next restart all three would get a good jump and go three wide in turn one as Earl and Sandercock would split Nayler coming out of turn two.  Sandercock would now lead on the high side but not for long as Earl was hooked up on the low side and would take over the lead.  Earl would hold on from there and take his second win of the season.  Earl has not finished outside the top five all season long.  Sandercock would come home in the runner up and Brown would recover for a strong third place finish.

Bill’s Johns Comp 4 feature would be the third feature to hit the track as 24 cars lined up for the drop of the green flag.   #46 Warren Mowat would take the initial lead but a rash of early cautions would move the #43 of Tom Vance and #44 of Brandon Wilkie into second and third behind Mowat.   #44 Wilke would take the lead and would not look back from there going on to his first ever win followed by Vance and Mowat.

The Sanderson Tire and Automotive Repair Southern Ontario Sprints would hit the track with #30 Adam West and #98 Paul Pekkonen starting on the front row.  Pekkonen would jump out to the early lead but it would not be long before second row starter 7x Jamie Collard would work around the top side of West and then take the lead from Pekkonen on lap three.  The top three would stay that way for a number of laps with Collard, Pekkonen and West but it was #0 Glen “the Ohsweken Flyer” Styres that was on the move and working hard on West for third.  Styers would get by West and then Pekkonen to move into second and would start to close in on Collard in lapped traffic.  It was a straight green flag run right from lap 1 and it looked it might go green to checker.  Styres was continuing to close on Collard but knew time was running out and was pushing the high side to the limits when on lap 16 he would jump the cushion and end up spinning off of turn three for the first and only caution of the race.  On the restart with a cushion of three lapped cars between him and second place #71 Travis Cunningham, Collard would break out to a lead and would not look back for his first win of 2012 with the SOS and at Brighton Speedway.  Cunningham would hold on to second but not without a fight as he battled 2011 SOS Champion #51 Lee Ladouceur who came home third.  Sandercock who was doing double duty started the feature 20th because of his rookie status and ended in 8th for his second sprint car race ever.

Dan Ferguson would pick up his third win of the season in the Bainer’s Radiator Canadian Modified class that would earn him Campbellford Chrysler Driver of the week honours.  Dan had a hard fought race coming from his seventh starting spot to take the lead from #91 Craig  Handley with less than ten laps to go and would not look back from there.

On Sunday of this double header weekend the Annual Hotch’s Auto Parts Fathers Day Enduro took place on a beautiful sunny afternoon.  Winners of the Juniors race was #22 Colin Gregory while former Comp 4 Champion Stacey Ferguson Scott picked up the ladies race.  The 100 Lap main event was a closely contested battle with the top four drivers all completing 100 laps.  In the end #24 Dave Small crossed the line just car lengths ahead of #7 Jon Driscoll for the win.  The Flag pole race was won by #01 Kevin Gregory.

Another huge night takes place at Brighton Speedway this Saturday night as Deerhaven Farm and Garden presents Adecco MONSTER TRUCK night featuring Aftershock and Krazy Train.  Also World of Outlaw Late Model Stars Chub Frank “Chubzilla” and 2011 WOO Champion Rick Eckert will be on hand to battle a handful of our own Late Model Stars in the Outlaw Dash!  Main Gates open at 5pm this week and advance tickets are available at the Speedway office.  Aftershock, Krazy Train, Chub Frank and Rick Eckert will all be on hand in the courtyard at 5pm for autographs and to meet and greet the fans.  It will be a full show of racing plus Monster Trucks and the Outlaw Dash where our drivers race the best in the business with 700 – 800 horsepower under their hoods.  Racing actions starts at 7pm, for more details visit www.brightonspeedway.com

Wilson Picks Up 20th SOS Win At Brighton Speedway

Wilson Picks Up 20th SOS Win At Brighton Speedway

Brighton, ON – (Photo by Rod Henderson – www.CanadianRacer.com) On a beautiful Saturday night a capacity crowd poured into the stands to see the Southern Ontario Sprints presented by Sanderson’s Automotive at Brighton Speedway for their first trip to the track on the shores of Lake Ontario in 2012 .

Among the 18 teams that rolled into the pits to compete for the evening were 2 local late model drivers making their debut as rookie sprint car stars. Charlie Sandercock had been doing some testing in the #57 and it showed. Charlie would finish 4th in his first ever sprint car race. Caley Weese was called up to replace Dick Mahoney in the #79. Dick is recovering from some off season minor surgery and served as Race Director for the event.

It was not a great start to the season for #25 Warren Mahoney as he did a 360 on the tail tank before landing on the top wing in the second heat race of the night. Track crews righted the #25 and Mahoney continued on to finish 3rd in the heat, making for some interesting footage for the TV film crew that was on hand taping the event for a reality TV series in development featuring the Southern Ontario Sprints.

The #11 of Chris Jones and #30 Adam West would lead the field to green with Jones jumping out to the early lead. Jones, who won his heat race earlier in the evening would lead until lap seven when #5 Keith Dempster would hit the front straight wall hard and flip before coming to a stop at the flag stand. Dempster was able to walk away but his #5 suffered heavy damage and was done for the evening. On the restart #07x Dain Naida pulled into the lead past Jones with #42w Rick Wilson in second battling with #30 Adam West. Naida’s car suddenly slowed on the back stretch in front of the field to bring out a caution as he seemed to coast without power. Naida restarted at the tail of the field, only to have the problem resurface on the restart forcing him to retire for the night with terminal driveline problems. On the ensuing restart, the new battle at the front would be between Prince Edward County Star Jones and fan favorite “The Joyceville Jet” Rick Wilson. With Wilson at the top side and Jones running the lower line the two raced side by side in an intense race where the lead swapped positions a number of times. In behind them an equally intense battle was thrilling the crowd as #25 “Wiley” Warren Mahoney was up high and rookie Sandercock was down low.
Rick Wilson would pick up his 20th career Sprint Feature at Brighton followed by #11 Jones and #67 Chris Durand, who equaled his previous best finish with a 3rd. #57 Charlie Sandercock had a fantastic rookie drive moving to 4th all the way from his 16th starting spot. #25 Warren Mahoney rounded out the top five.

Wilson Triumphant In SOS Season Opener At Brighton

Wilson Triumphant In SOS Season Opener At Brighton

From Brighton Speedway – Fans were packed in the grandstands at Brighton Speedway on Saturday night as Vanzuylen Tire & Alignment and Rock 107 welcomed back the Southern Ontario Sprints for their first of six shows on the 1/3rd mile clay oval.  It was all time Brighton Speedway feature win leader Rick Wilson returning to victory circle for his 20th feature wins in a Sprint Car at Brighton.  The May long weekend has been blessed with warm temperatures and with the Vanderlaan Building Supplies Late Models, Brighton Automotive Pro Stocks and the Bill’s Johns Comp 4 divisions on hand, the night was topped off by a fantastic fireworks display by Mystical Distributing.

The night kicked off with the 2nd Annual Chili Competition with Del “Chili” MacGregor sweeping the victory as declared by the Rock 107 Lovely Ladies.  Sitting as the Campbellford Chrysler Driver of the Week for May 12th “Chili” MacGregor entertained the fans before the main events kicked off.

First feature up on the night was the Vanderlaan Building Supplies Late Models, the #20 Terry Hunt and #12 Kyle Sopaz would lead the cars to the line.  Sopaz’s returning this week after blowing up early last weekend didn’t seem to slow him down as he and Hunt raced side by side with Sopaz crossing the line ahead at the end of lap one.  Through the pack #57 Charlie Sandercock, #11 Corey Earl were working their way from their starting spots at the back of the grid.  There was side by side action all through the field.  Sopaz was up high and had to fend off battles from Hunt and the #25 Greg Belyea.  Midway through the race Belyea would get by Hunt and now Sandercock had moved in to forth when Hunt went into turn one and got a little loose and slid up the track while Sandercock was coming with a full head of steam, the two made contact and Hunt spun going into two.  On the following restart Sopaz would again pick the high line and Belyea was down low with Sandercock and Earl lined up third and forth.  After the return to green the four drivers were aggressively going for the top spot and went into turn three four wide!  Sopaz got shuffled up into the marbles dropping two forth and when they came out of turn four it would be Sandercock, Earl and Belyea in third.  Sandercock would maintain the lead from then till the finish two catch his second feature in as many weeks but not without numerous challenges from Earl who wound up a close second and #77 Caley Weese had a steady run up to 3rd place for her first top three of the season.

The Bill’s Johns Comp 4 division had 25 starters for the feature and #17 Jeff Humphry would pick up his second win of the season.  The win didn’t come easy as Jeff started near the rear of the field and had to fight off a number of challenges from his team mate #03 Justin Ramsay and #10 Travis McLean.  Humphry would run the high line most of the race while Ramsey would try lap after lap to get enough momentum to get by shooting down low in the corners but could not get it done.

The Southern Ontario Sprint show presented by Sanderson’s Automotive  featured two Brighton regulars as #77 Caley Weese was offered a ride in the #79 Dick Mahoney sprint at the last minute and #57 Charlie Sandercock took his first start in the 360 sprint car.  #11 of Chris Jones and #30 Adam West would lead the field to green with Jones jumping out to the early lead.  Jones would hold the lead till lap seven when #5 Keith Dempster got caught up on the front straight away wall and rolled hard at the flag stand much to the dismay of the crowd, Dempster was able to walk away under his own power but his #5 ride was not so lucky suffering heavy damage.  On the restart #07 Dain Naida would now pull along side Jones and although Jones again would get the jump he could not keep the hard charging Naida behind him.  With Naida up front and Jones in second #42 Rick Wilson was battling with West for third until Naida’s luck would leave him and he lost all power to the car causing a yellow.  On the ensuing restart the new battle at the front would be between Prince Edward County Star Jones and fan favorite Wilson.  The two raced side by side in an intense race where the lead swapped positions a number of times.  In behind them an equally intense battle was ensuing behind them for forth between #67 Chris Durand, West, the #25 Warren Mahoney and Sandercock for third through sixth place.  Again side by side action was thrilling the crowd as Mahoney was up high and Sandercock was down low.  Wilson would pick up his 20th career Sprint Feature at Brighton followed by Jones, Durand, Sandercock and Mahoney rounding out the top five.

As the Sanderson’s Sprints finished up their Victory Lane presentations that crowd was awed by the exciting display of pyrotechnics provided by Mystical Distributing of Trenton.  A long time track supported, Mystical provides all fireworks for the Speedway and the selection on Saturday was incredible.

The final feature of the night saw the Brighton Automotive Pro Stocks in the first of their Larry’s Towing Triple Crown Features.  #72 Doug Anderson would pick up his second win in a row followed by #3 Paul Read, #35 Gerry Kimmerly, #45 Mike Schonauer and #74 Mike Lucas.  #83 Jay O’Hara held the points lead going into then night but suffered a setback with a fire in the engine compartment.  Jay got out of the car safely but has his work cut out for him this week.

The Campbellford Chrysler honors this week go to the duo #57 Charlie Sandercock and #77 Caley Weese who both did double duty on Saturday in the Late Model and Sprint Division.  Sandercock with a first in his late model and forth in the sprint finish, while Weese grabbed a nice third place finish in the late model and 11th out of 18 for her first ever time in the sprint car.

Be here early this upcoming week as Campbellford Chrysler presents Car Load Night and see Sandercock and Weese before the races.  Car Load night at the track is always a great time, fill all your seatbelts and for only $25.00 watch a fantastic night of dirt track racing.  A full race card is on hand as Vanderlaan Building Supplies Late Models, The Bainer’s Radiator Canadian Modifieds, Brighton Automotive Pro Stocks, Bill’s Johns Comp 4 and Quinte Septic Stingers hit the 1/3rd mile oval.  Visit www.brightonspeedway.com fir complete details.

SOS Set To Kick Off Season At Brighton Saturday Night

SOS Set To Kick Off Season At Brighton Saturday Night

From Brighton Speedway – Be sure to join us Saturday when Rock 107 and VanZuylen Tire and Alignment present the first appearance by the Sanderson Automotive Southern Ontario Sprints as they hit the 1/3rd mile oval to start their 2012 points season.  Also featuring the Vanderlaan Building Supplies Pro Late Models, The Brighton Automotive Pro Stocks and the Bill’s Johns Comp 4’s.

The 2nd annual BSP Chili contest will take place at Harry’s Place in turn four before the races. The contest is open to anyone so call or email the speedway for details.  Drop off your pot of chili and see if you can beat Del “Chili” MacGregor this year!

Gates open at 5:30 and racing starts at 7pm sharp. For complete details on this or other events please visit www.brightonspeedway.com or email info@brightonspeedway.com

Local race car driver Charlie Sandercock will take another step in his young racing career and take the reins of a 700 horsepower Southern Ontario Sprints 360 Sprint Car for the first time this Saturday at Brighton Speedway.  Charlie, who has raced in almost every division at the speedway is now a top competitor in the Pro Late Model class will be doing double duty this Saturday as he battles for the checkered flag in two classes this weekend.
Sandercock has impressed many with his driving skills over the past 11 years, but has made a roaring leap since February 2012.Last winter, Sandercock was given, “an opportunity of a lifetime”, according to the 25 year old driver, by fellow competitor, Greg Belyea.  Charlie, Greg and their crew in tow, headed to Florida to compete in 9 days of North America’s most grueling Super Late Model races at Volusia and Bubba Speedway with the World of Outlaw Late Models.  With some success and vast knowledge gained, Sandercock continues to expand his driving opportunities with his great results and picked up the win this past week in his Late Model at his home track Brighton.

The promising driver will be once again at the helm of a Belyea ride this weekend as the touring “Winged Warriors” of the Southern Ontario Sprints hit the 1/3rd mile oval to race at Brighton Speedway. Although, slightly nervous, Sandercock’s intuitive driving skills will be his best quality as he takes on two fields of cars in the Pro Late Model and Sprint Car division.  Fans that were on hand last Saturday at the Speedway were able to see Sandercock getting his first taste of the open wheeled car as he brought Belyea’s #25 Sprint car out for practice in two hot lap sessions on May 12th and looked right at home in the seat. Don’t miss out on your chance to see it this weekend!
