Cornwall Motor Speedway Reflects Back On Exciting 2012 Season

Cornwall Motor Speedway Reflects Back On Exciting 2012 Season

By Craig Revelle – Finish Line Web Design - November 6, 2012

Cornwall, Ontario – By Craig Revelle – November 6, 2012 – With racing in our area now over for another season, Cornwall Motor Speedway would like to reflect on our season, and give recognition to all of our great champions. We also want to thank all our fans, sponsors, employees, volunteers, teams and drivers for supporting Cornwall Motor Speedway and we look forward to returning for another season in May of 2013.

A lot of early season hype surrounded the off-season announcement that the World of Outlaw Late Models and World of Outlaw Sprint Cars would both be on the 2012 schedule. There was plenty of disappointment when the Late Model race was cancelled due to rain, but the World of Outlaw Sprint cars came into Cornwall for the first time and put on a spectacular event in late July that awed the capacity crowd. The 2012 schedule was packed with other special events, including the three race Canadian Nationals Series for the 358 Modifieds, in which two of those races also doubled as Mr. DIRTcar Series events. The Pro Stocks and Sportsman also had Mr. DIRTcar events, as well as the Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series.

Dale Planck, from Homer, New York took the overall track championship in the 358 Modified Division and also claimed the Canadian Nationals Series title for the first time in his career. Not to be outdone, Chris Herbison also claimed multiple titles, winning the Sportsman track championship for the second year in a row, and also winning the inaugural St. Lawrence Seaway Sportsman championship. Joey Ladouceur has been dominant in the Pro Stock division for a long time, and recently announced his move to the Sportsman division for 2013, but not before winning yet another Cornwall Speedway Pro Stock championship, the Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Championship and the Mohawk Racing Parts Pro Stock Series title. Benoit Dubois was this year’s Semi Pro Champion while Martin Bernard captured the Mini Stock crown.

Although Dale Planck won two championships this season, he certainly had to fight for it over the final few weeks, as five drivers entered the final two weeks of the season with a shot at the overall track championship. His win, under immense pressure on the final night of the season proved to be the difference in the overall championship battle and the Canadian Nationals Series. Laurent Ladouceur, Chris Raabe, Joel Doiron and Planck’s teammate/car owner Carey Terrance all finished in the top five in track points while Danny O’Brien and Terrance again chased Planck in the Canadian Nationals.

Chris Herbison had a tremendous season in 2011 and came back even stronger in 2012. His success didn’t come easy though, as he battled Sportsman rookie Corey Wheeler over the final few weeks of the year. Wheeler, who had graduated from the Pro Stock division had a very impressive rookie season with a pair of feature wins. Ryan Arbuthnot, Dan Jalbert and Louis Jackson Jr. finished amongst the top five in Sportsman points.

There hasn’t been a more dominant driver in any division over the past decade then Joey Ladouceur in the Pro Stock division. He had three feature wins in 2012 and his consistency was unprecedented, with a season low finish of eighth. Ladouceur won his sixth Cornwall Speedway Pro Stock Championship over Ryan Stabler, Ghislain Valade, George Renaud and Dion Oakes. Ladouceur also claimed his ninth career Mohawk Racing Parts Pro Stock Series. He leaves the Pro Stock division as the winningest driver in all of DIRTcar Pro Stock competition.

Benoit Dubois had a strong season in the Semi Pro division earning the top honors over Joey Woods, Junior Delormier, Michael McCargar and Derek Cryderman.

Martin Bernard’s first season at Cornwall Speedway in the Mini Stock division proved successful, claiming the track championship by just four points over Mathieu Aubin. Justin Derosiers, Jamie McKee and Joel Pilon also had fantastic season’s, finishing the year among the top five in points.

2013 will surely be an exciting year as well. Stay tuned for off-season news and announcements. The banquet for the 2012 season will he held in the Spring, with date and location to be announced after the new year.

Running in fourth David Hébert headed to the pits on lap 9 just before Brandon Sweet pulled off the track on the following lap. As the leaders were in heavy traffic conditions, Planck was able to grab the lead on lap 26. Steve Bernard had a strong run as he was now third with Danny O’Brien making his way on top in fourth with 90 laps to go. Planck made some nifty moves and got away from the rest of the pack while Bernard challenged Billings for second as O’Brien was waiting in fourth.  Bernard used the inside portion to grab second as Billings slipped to fourth with O’Brien in third. Planck lost his huge lead as caution came out on lap 46.

Green lights came back on lap 55 as Planck was still in first as O’Brien was strong on the top side of the track, he charged to second on lap 58 and was getting closer to Planck. Chris Raabe and Carey Terrance made their way in the top 5 as Doiron was back in fifth as Bernard lost a lot of real estate. Francois Bernier slowed in the backstretch and the yellow was out on lap 65. O’Brien had a strong start and got the lead as Planck was still in contention with teammate Terrance now in third. The mandatory yellow was out on lap 75 as race teams were able to race on their cars.

After the ten minutes break, O’Brien got back to the lead as Planck was running side by side with O’Brien, the inside lane was working for Planck as he got back to the lead just before caution came out for Stephane Lafrance who had a flat tire on lap 81. Planck in front with O’Brien right behind him as Raabe holds down third. Again, the leader used slower cars to his advantage as he pulled away from the rest of the field as Terrance was back in third. With only 25 laps remaining, Planck is still in the lead with O’Brien, Terrance, Raabe and Dingwall, the front five. While running a strong fifth, Kyle Dingwall stopped in the infield and the yellow on lap 108. Planck in the lead on the green as Matt Williamson made his way to the lead pack and was running in fourth with 113 laps down. Williamson got by Terrance with only 4 laps to go. Planck led the final laps to capture the win over O’Brien and Williamson completed the podium. With his third win of the season, Planck captured his third Cornwall Motor Speedway feature and first Canadian Nationals crown.

The final race of the 40-lap Mohawk Race Parts Pro-Stock Series saw Guy Viens in the lead for the first two laps as George Renaud got the lead with Ryan Stabler pulling in second with 5 laps down. Stabler and Renaud ran side by side as Stabler looked strong on top and took the lead on lap 12. New 2012 track champion, Joey Ladouceur was now in contention running third. Ladouceur passed Renaud for second just before he got clipped by Claude Parisien sending Ladouceur to the back and Parisien was black flagged with 16 laps to go. Stabler in the lead with Ghislain Valade moving up to third but Stéphane Lebrun charged and got by Valade. Stabler was able to survive a few late cautions and won his third feature of the season over Renaud and Dion Oakes. Ladouceur captured his fourth track championship and Mohawk Race Parts Series in a row.

Chris Herbison jumped to the lead in the 40-lap finale of the St.Lawrence Seaway Sportsman series. Two accidents involving several cars occurred in the first 5 laps. With being late at night, decision was made to start counting caution laps. Herbison still in the lead on the green with Dylan Evoy making his way to second with Jessica Powers in third with 15 laps to go.  Herbison and Evoy were in battle for the same lane and Evoy was able to pass the leader with 8 laps to go as the yellow lights were out. Evoy in the lead as Devon Caron and Louie Jackson slipped by Herbison and completed the podium. Herbison`s fourth place in the feature secured the track championship and St.Lawrence Seaway Sportsman series championship.

The 15-lap Evans Bus Line Semi-Pro feature had 18 cars for the initial green as Junior Delormier took the lead. Delormier led for 4 laps until Michael McCargar got the top spot. The leader had Derek Cryderman has a dancing partner at the halfway point. Cryderman was able to pass McCargar at the halfway point. Canadian Nationals Event Postponed To August 19th At Cornwall

Canadian Nationals Event Postponed To August 19th At Cornwall

Cornwall, Ont – Tuesday, August 7, 2012 – Martin Bélanger – A decision was taken regarding the reschedule of the 2nd race of the Canadian Nationals. This event will be held on Sunday, August 19th.

The Modifieds will run a 100-lap feature replacing the regular 30-lap race, the Sportsman, Pro-Stock and Mini-Stock will have a complete race program as the SpeedSTR will be in town for their annual event. The Semi-Pro class will have the night off. The decision was taken along with RPM Speedway as they have 2-day event next weekend and Cornwall Motor Speedway did not want to interfere with these races.

Do not forget next Sunday, August 12th as the Pro-Stock and Semi-Pro will have double features due to cancellation on July 15th, a complete program will be presented for all five divisions on Cayer Motor Sales Night.

With only 4 events left counting toward the championship points, the battles on the track will be heated in each category. With 5 drivers still in the chase in the Modifieds as Chris Raabe and Joel Doiron are currently tied for the lead, we will probably have to wait until the last show to determine the 2012 champion. The scenario is similar in Sportsman as only 1 point separates the top 2 between Chris Herbison and Dan Jalbert. In Pro-Stock, Joey Ladouceur as a comfortable lead in front as Benoit Dubois only has a 16-point edge over Andrew Giroux in Semi-Pro and a battle to the end in Mini-Stock between Mathieu Aubin and Martin Bernard with only 8 points between them.
